Puberty

Here's a direct quotation from my psych textbook:

"Psychological reactions to puberty are influenced by whether it occurs early or late. Overall, early maturation tends to be associated with more positive outcomes for boys than for girls. Early maturing boys are acquire physical strength and size, facilitating their success in athletics and other physical activities that contribute to a male's popularity and positive body image.
In contrast, early maturing girls are more likely to develop eating disorders, smoke, dirnk, have problems in school, and experience psychological distress than girls who mature later. Some early-maturing girls welcome their mature appearance, but others develop a negative body image and feel they are too fat."

I was reading this just now, and felt that my psych textbook was creepily reading my mind, because I went through puberty relatively early and I'd say that being one of the few physically mature girls was one "cause" of my ED.

Of course, the psych book does have studies to back it up, so I believe what they're saying. I'm not trying to prove them right or wrong.

But what are your experiences with this?
