Anorexia 'high' likened to ecstasy

In the Daily Telegraph yesterday:

'Anorexia sufferers get a "high" through starving themselves similar to that experienced by taking the drug ecstasy.

Anorexia and ecstasy are said to abnormally suppress the appetite due to the same confused signals in the brain.

Scientists who carried out the research said anorexia could be thought of as a kind of addiction, where the sufferers become "hooked" on the high of being hungry.

The discovery opens up the possibility of treatments for anorexia using drugs that would stop these "highs" and therefore the hunger addiction.'
