If needed, please let me know, and I'll delete it.

I dont know if this is allowed. But i just got SO offended when i read this, and its ignorance like this that makes me glad that this community exists...
id like for all of you to focus on the very generalizing statements made, and tell me how this makes you feel, and if youve ever run into this sort of thing before. preconceptions about WHY we have the eating disorders, and basically, the age old question, "why would anyone DO that to themselves?"

this is a response(albeit a very uninformed one) to this very question. this was posted into some random person's journal. he friended me, and i have no idea who he is, besides a very older aged male who is, obviously ignorant.

""Anorexic Women Must See The Truth
My neighbor turned her granddaughter in to a mental institution because she's anorexic, and she refused to eat anything solid for almost a week straight. She could very well have died, and even now she's angry that her grandmothe has had her institutionalized.

I've known the girl for a long time, and she's always been very bright. But she always done very stupid things for attention. She doesn't have any social skills at all, and she doesn't have a very realistic perception of the world. And from what I've seen here on livejournal, most anorexics are here are also like that. They have no idea how to regulate their health, or how to work with nutrition, and so many of them simply try to become as thin as possible. And they often die because of it.

Support groups over this service make this possible. Idiots listen to other idiots. It's a terrible thing to behold, but it's very much true. With each passing day, hordes of young girls give into an insatiable desire to slowly starve themselves to death. And they do it under the delusion that they are somehow perfecting themselves (a common misconception) or that they are somehow making themselves more attractive (which they're not, studies show that most guys prefer women who are of an average weight, with a healthy build that's been acquired through constant exercise and hard work).

Think about it. If I were a young, single man why would I want to waste time with someone who is trying to become thinner, weaker, dumber, and more pathetic than they already are? Stop and think about this for a second. You're not achieving any goals, and you're not gaining any new friends (except for random retards over the Internet) by doing this.

Ladies, it's time to accept the reality that this is about your social skills. That's why so many of you have Mary Kate and Ashley avatars, which even a guy of my age can tell is a sure sign of loserdom. You don't need to continue doing this! Work on your social skills before you begin to "work" on your body by preparing it for the vultures.""

so this post has a point. have any of you run into plain and abrasive ignorance like this in your lives? if so, how did you deal with it?

Calorie Restriction Society

Source: Calorie Restriction Society
  • 150 members on website, individuals cut daily consumption by 25% approximately

The goal of Calorie Restriction is to achieve a longer and healthier life by
  • eating fewer calories
  • consuming adequate vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients

An excerpt from "Hunger: An Unnatural History" by Sharman Apt Russell (pg 13-14) about the society:

"Men over six feet tall, weighing approximately 174 pounds, will eat 1500 – 1900 calories a day. Other calorie-restrictors eat less. Typical calorie-restrictors tend to be introverted, self-disciplined and male. They admit that their lifestyles can lead to obsessive behaviours, which they try to avoid. Their goal is to live longer, not less well. They admit that calorie restriction can mean a reduced sex drive, and a greater sensitivity to cold, although they also point to feelings of vitality and increased mental awareness. Most say that hunger is a constant companion. They share strategies to reduce their cravings for food as they map out their days and meals in a war against hunger. They are the newest version of the hunger artist, happy to be in a good fight"

I had never heard about this until a few days ago, and it sounds kinda cult-ish to me. I wonder if others see EDs as cults (aside from pro-ana websites and such). What do you guys think of this website/society? Am I the only person who hasn't heard of this before? Check out the website, particularly "About the CR Society" and CR Guide, especially CR vs. Anorexia. I know some people in this society might take things too far, and it reminds me of raw veganism but more "pure", as if it’s a religion or spiritual awakening or something. I also find it interesting that males represent a large number of people in this society, and I wonder how many of these males are spiritual/religious.

I think the anorexia link is interesting, especially since they make comparisons of anorexia and calorie restriction, which can be found on the CR vs. Anorexia link, subtitles in bold.
