American Idol runner-up Katharine McPhee waged a five-year battle with bulimia that she managed to get under control just before the competition began last winter, she tells People magazine's next issue, on sale Friday.
"Food was how I dealt with emotions," says McPhee, 22, who says that at one point she would vomit up to seven times a day. "As soon as I would feel something, I would eat."
When she auditioned for Idol in August, her bulimia was "out of control." She credits her parents and actor boyfriend, Nick Cokas, 41, for helping when she began a three-month program at L.A.'s Eating Disorder Center of California in October. She reported to the Idol set in December. McPhee chose not to tell fellow contestants and had "somebody I would try to go see on a weekly basis" to avoid a relapse.
Although she says she is still healing, McPhee, Teen People's August cover girl, tells the magazine: "I'm really starting to embrace my curves."
