tipping the scales

If, say, one buys a scale (with a dial - not digital) from a store for £2.99, how far off could/would you expect it to be? Should I really only use it to measure relative change? Can I in any way trust it? I hate the idea of numbers on a dial ruling my life, but that's how it is... and I can't afford to get a high-quality scale because I'm only going to be here for 2 more months and then it will have to be thrown away anyway.
