Appeal of ED fiction/nonfiction

To those of you who read or write ED fiction/nonfiction/whatever, what draws you to it? Is it the sense of comfort knowing that you're not alone, or something else? Also, which part is your favorite in the typical ED fiction/nonfiction story-arc: beginning of illness, in the hold of the illness, recovery, or something else?

I'm just wondering because lately I've been re-re-reading The Best Little Girl in the World (a book that I have a total love-hate relationship with) while I workout, mostly for not-so-healthy purposes. My favorite part of ED fiction is the beginning of the illness, because for some reason it fascinates me...perhaps if I read enough how it happens, I can undo it in myself or something like that. Thoughts?
