Excessive exercise

Recently, I've been mulling over the distinctions between BED and nonpurging bulimia. The DSM-IV lists "excessive exercise" as an example of an inappropriate compensatory behavior found in bulimia, but it doesn't define how much exercise qualifies as excessive. In my search for answers, I stumbled across a quotation by Joyce D. Nash, PhD. who had the following to say:

Generally speaking, exceeding more than about 3500 calories burned in a given week is considered excessive. After that point, the health benefits of exercise decrease and the risk of injury increases.

Dr. Nash was writing about the symptom in anorectics, not bulimics, but I was intrigued by her readiness to quantify excessive exercise.

What do you think about this? Would you attach a different definition to "excessive exercise"? How much is too much to be considered normal?
